The Challenge
Our client wanted to offer their users a solution with a simple interface where it's easy to add expenses and approve them. With a scalable solution, the client would offer a more competitive solution that can authorize purchases in any country at any given time.
The Solution
The team at Softjourn suggested a cost-efficient solution that would run on both Android and iOS. Another reason why this would be a good fit for our client was the fact that the application doesn't require heavy graphics and it's much faster compared to native application development.
The Result
Our solution proved to be very successful and the client was very satisfied with its speed and efficiency. During this project, we have built two applications for the admin side and users.
The Challenge
Our client is a big expense management platform that offers a variety of services to help companies get their corporate expenses under control.
By focusing on the visibility of corporate expenses, they come across some problems when it comes to admin work. Their idea was to create cross-platform apps that will make sure every admin can approve expenses, assign more money or have an overview of expenses with just a few simple clicks.
Softjourn's experience in expense management and fintech solutions gave us a unique perspective and ability to quickly understand client's needs and suggest the best way to move forward.

The Solution
A cost-effective solution was built—in this case, a hybrid application written in HTML5 using PhoneGap, that would run on both iOS and Android devices. Although these type of apps are slower than native apps, in this case it was a good fit: no heavy graphics or data needed to be displayed on any one screen.
Development phase I
Softjourn worked with PEX to define the major functionality that was necessary to replicate from the desktop to the mobile device. To improve the user experience of the mobile version, Softjourn provided input to the UX. The definition developed also included architecture and security as well as a testing plan.
Development phase II
During this phase, we built 2 mobile apps:
- for PEX administrators, which would be used to add/reduce funds on employee cards, suspend cards, review transactions by cardholder, approval, and so on; and
- for PEX cardholders to see their balance, history of transactions, request funds, and so on.
The Benefits
- PEX makes spend management simple. Getting started is a breeze, and once you're up and running, you'll see just how efficient spend management can be.
- Cost efficiency has increased. The self-service feature means that the call center is less loaded with calls.
- The apps are now available in the Apple Store and on Google Play for download by PEX customers.
- The level of convenience for card users has increased dramatically. No more calling into the call to have their balance checked, or to request funds.
The mobile app is so convenient for the users of the system. In addition, it reduces calls to customer support for balance checks or to verify if a transfer has gone through.

The Result
Thanks to our understanding of the PEX's business goals, our development team managed to develop two applications that combine complex data structures with a simple and user-friendly interface. The whole development process demonstrated the power of hybrid applications and how successful they can be for expense management.
