Project Discovery Phase
Grow Competitive Advantage by Testing Your Ideas
Moving from an innovative idea to a high-quality product takes planning and skills. Softjourn has the right talent pool to bring your ideas to life, as well as firm up your project discovery by understanding your technical needs.
If you have an existing project, we can set up a dedicated team to examine your current architecture, codebase, deployment approach, and pipelines to ensure that everything is in place to start working. Once we outline your goals, Softjourn has the technical know-how to generate a new solution or rewrite the current on—and give you a new direction for product development.
Why Work With Softjourn
Softjourn has a three-pronged, iterative approach when it comes to the first phase of the discovery phase of a software project:
- Interview—to understand the needs and gather all the necessary information
- Map—to draw up plans and identify potential gaps
- Document—to generate trust and share information
The discovery process is highly interactive and requires client participation. Softjourn will conduct working sessions with you and your team to analyze each of the functionalities and workflows.
Working one-hour sessions are typically held twice a week. In-between sessions, Softjourn’s business analyst/product manager defines workflows and functionalities using visuals and texts in order to present how potential users might flow through the system.
Discovery Phase Deliverables
The most valuable deliverables that the client gets at the end of the Project Discovery Phase are the Software Requirements Specifications document (SRS), timeline and pricing estimation for the entire development process.
What Makes Project Discovery Phase Valuable
The discovery phase helps our customers to think through the entire product definition process in order to see where there might be gaps in knowledge and potential risks, and to gain a better understanding of the development phases.
One of the biggest benefits of the discovery phase is the documentation, which explains the whole development process with all of its stages in detail. Our clients can later use this to attract investors and have a more in-depth understanding of the overall process.
Using a discovery phase, you will get a more accurate estimate of the costs and time required to develop an MVP of your service. Once clients have a clear understanding of how much money they’ll have to invest in the process, they can inform investors and plan their future steps.
Software Development Case Studies

IMS Management Services: Software Rewrite to Modernize Legacy Systems
IMS Management Services, a provider of ticketing support and cash management for festivals and fairs, developed its own ticket and cash management system, which had met IMS needs for years. But the owners were aware that they would have to update it to a modern tech stack to remain reliable. That’s why they partnered with Softjourn, as an expert technology partner, to help them make the transition.
Rewriting and Developing an Event Registration System
An event registration system is necessary for a company to effectively plan and manage any event. Working with Softjourn on the discovery phase, this client realized that their labor-intensive legacy system needed replacing, so that their clients, as well as non-tech employees, would be able to set up and edit events.

Cinewav: A/V Solution for Outdoor Cinema Experience
Cinewav, a Singapore-based startup, allows users to watch a movie on a big public screen and listen to the audio on their mobile phones using earbuds/headphones. Softjourn’s team developed a solution that aligns video and audio perfectly and proved that the idea works incredibly well for live events. Cinewav believes this app could create the largest outdoor cinema and gather sizable audiences without creating noise pollution.
Discovery Phase as The Basis for Startup Product Development—Our Take
Making decisions in the early stages of business can be difficult. Unsure about their next steps in product development, a Malaysian-based client turned to Softjourn for help with the project discovery phase. Upon realization that building a customized solution comes with a price, the client-focused on building a clickable prototype presentable for investors.
Tixnet: Discovery Phase as the Foundation of Every Successful Project
Building a detailed Product Discovery Document (PDD) enabled our client to become one step closer to creating a solution that will cater to all of their needs. With a PDD, the client acquired descriptions of the user and data flow for the access control application, including a UI design. One of the benefits of the discovery phase is gaining a better understanding of the access control app and obtaining sufficient documentation to take it to any development partner going forward.
