Petro Ursulovych
BACKHE KNEW HOW TO LIVE AND PRESENT THE MOST DIVERSE DANCE AND STAGE ROLES
Petro played the guitar, loved sports, especially wrestling, and was a very good dancer. Olena Malynovska, director and choreographer of the "Prolisok" folk dance ensemble, of which he used to be a member, said:
Petro Ursulovych is a vivid example of the Ukrainian creative youth of the Kalush community. In the early 1990s, as a young man, he joined the folk amateur dance ensemble "Prolisok" under the "Yunist" Palace of Culture, which was managed by MeritedArtist of Ukraine, Volodymyr Baka, and his wife Sofia.
Infinitely devoted, extremely persistent, and truly passionate about dancing, he was able to achieve amazing results. He perfectly performed complex dance compositions and tricks and soon became the company's soloist.
He was performing at all the events in the city. As part of the team, he traveled a lot, both in Ukraine and abroad, in particular: in Poland, Belgium, and Germany several times. He knew how to live and present the most diverse dance and stage roles. He was a persistent, responsible, gifted, interesting, and creative person. And also a sincere, kind, and reliable friend.
Although Petro had suffered a broken spine in the past, his inner strength and incredible willpower got him back on his feet to make a full recovery after the injury. With his persistence, discipline, and appreciation for life, he would continue engaging in sports and motivating others.
PETRO CONSIDERED THE OFFICE AS HIS SECOND HOME
Petro Ursulovych worked at Softjourn as the Head of Security Service from 2016 to 2022. His colleagues described him as a sincere, dedicated, and responsible person. Petro demonstrated these qualities in everything he did, caring for both the workspace and the people working at Softjourn. He would always go above and beyond. He sometimes joked with Vadym Kunakh, the Security Officer, asking him to break something so that he would have a reason to repair it. One of the last things he did, right before going to the front, was installing a diesel generator on the roof, which kept the office operational during the electricity outages caused by russia's attack on Ukraine's energy infrastructure. At 5 a.m. on February 24th, 2022, Petro had just finished installing Softjourn’s diesel generator — our emergency power source — when he heard the first explosions, and he realized that a full-scale invasion had begun.
PETRO "KHMURYI" URSULOVYCH WAS ALWAYS READY TO DEFEND OUR COUNTRY BY ALL MEANS
He maintained a daily regimen of physical exertion and even adjusted his food options to the military standard. When asked why he limited and burdened himself so much, he would answer - "An old warrior is a wise warrior." No matter what circumstances were put in front of him, he wanted to remain calm and collected.
Not only that, but since Softjourn started a charity fund for the military in 2014, when russia first invaded Ukraine, Petro was one of the first people to volunteer to support the initiative. They gathered donations and bought vehicles and equipment for Ukraine’s Anti-Terrorist Operation (ATO). Throughout his tenure at Softjourn, Petro was committed to delivering and transferring the necessary vehicles and equipment to the ATO zone.
Even on his vacations, he would travel to the ATO zone, where he volunteered as a driver for teams of medics who provided medical care for soldiers and civilians in the Luhansk region. In 2018, Petro Ursulovych was recognized as the "Volunteer of the Year" in the city of Kalush in their competition that awarded the highest achievements of the year.
Petro started participating in the fight against russian aggression during the Euromaidan protests that began on November 21, 2013, on Independence Square in Kyiv. On this day, thousands of Ukrainians stood up to their government's decision, backed by russia, to reject the EU-Ukraine Association Agreement and pursue closer ties with Russia. The Euromaidan uprising culminated on February 18, when intense fighting in Kyiv between Maidan activists and the police resulted in the deaths of almost 100 protesters.
A fellow Euromaidan participant, Ivan Kachmar, who knew Petro well, recalled:
Petro was the most punctual person I knew; he was a man of his word who would always come to help. He was serious and kind at the same time. On February 18, he was at home [in Kalush] when he saw on the news what was happening in Mariinsky Park, he was with us in Kyiv on the Maidan on the night of the 19th.
Soon after, russia retaliated by annexing Crimea and invading regions of eastern Ukraine. This led Petro to join the 4th operational battalion of the National Guard, called "Kruk," with the mission to fight for freedom against tyranny. He had fought in the ATO zone for several years prior to the full-scale invasion of Russia in 2022.
Some people went to the ATO zone right after the Maidan, while others, due to the lack of state institutions at that time, began to organize the provision of everything necessary for our soldiers at the front. Thus, until 2016, Petro was the most active volunteer of the Public Coordination Center for Support and Assistance to ATO Soldiers in the Kalush Region. He repeatedly traveled to the hot spots of the ATO, delivering vehicles and everything they could hold for our soldiers. Whenever there was a need to go to the East again, Petro was among the first to go, he was always reliable. If it was necessary, it was necessary, and without further ado, he took up volunteer work.
On the evening of February 24, 2022, Petro once again stood up against evil by becoming the commander of the air assault division of the 80th separate air assault brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. During critical military missions, Petro maintained a calm and collected demeanor, which made him a reliable comrade in arms. His bravery and service were recognized with the Order for Courage, 3rd Class (awarded during his life) and the Order for Courage, 2nd Class (posthumous award).
His comrades shared this with us:
I met Petro at the beginning stages of the war near Snigurivka, in the Mykolaiv region. I was amazed by his courage and motivation; he inspired others. He was a person with a wonderful sense of humor. In the most difficult situations, he found words of support and consolation for his comrades. He was an extremely punctual and disciplined person, a man of his word and honor who was as bold as brass. A competent warrior, he was well-versed in military matters, people say about such individuals - a strong spirit. Even after his injury in June 2022, which made things extremely tough for him, he continued to claim that it was nothing major. He joked, laughed, and dreamed of returning to the forefront as soon as possible. You were the best, brother! Heroes never die!
While on duty, Petro was wounded; however, this setback did not deter him from continuing to be proactive. Even while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Dnipro, Petro took the initiative to repair all the power sockets in his ward. Later, he requested to be transferred to Ivano-Frankivsk, where Softjourn's R&D office is located, as he couldn't sit still and wanted to fix and improve things.
After a successful rehabilitation, Petro returned to the front lines to defend Ukraine. And on a fatal day of October 30, 2022, he was killed in action near the village of Nevsky in the Svatove district, Luhansk region. Prior to this, Petro fought in battles near Kherson alongside his brave and fallen Softjourn colleague, Oleh Perehuda. Petro, however, was unable to witness the success of his efforts in Kherson, as he died 11 days before Ukrainian troops liberated the city from Russian occupiers. Petro will always be remembered in our hearts.
Petro was a good friend… My brain can't accept that he has passed away. I think the door will open and Petro will come in… for a coffee. I want to believe that he just came off his marathon distance, for a break… Farewell, Soldier, farewell.
