Innovation on the Menu: Softjourn's Role in Shaping Over a Decade of Tacit's Success

Building a decade of partnership with Tacit through many successful projects.

Our History with Tacit

In 2012, it was nearly impossible to order food online in Toronto. Most restaurants were using outdated and inefficient technology for orders. Realizing a market gap, Cris Jucan and Brenda Craininc created Tacit, a white-label mobile, kiosk, and online food ordering platform.

More than 10 years later, Tacit has become a leader in food ordering, empowering restaurant-goers to easily browse menus, manage all their orders, and pay online for their food. Tacit’s mission is to bring comfort and convenience into the food ordering process, providing their customers ease in ordering food from various platforms.

Tacit first started as software for dine-in restaurants, however, once they added POS and payment integrations, Tacit realized the vast potential for digital ordering and expanded their offerings. Today, Tacit’s platform seamlessly integrates with the systems of restaurants, universities, hospitals, and casinos, making it easy for their clients to implement and offer the easy online ordering for their customers.

Our developers continue to impress me with their expertise, knowledge, and dedication to our project. They are my team, and I count on them as if we were all working in the same office.

Brenda Crainic, CTO at Tacit Innovations

We began collaborating with Tacit in 2013 as they chose Softjourn to assist with developing the backend of their ordering system.

Brenda Crainic, the Co-Founder and CTO of Tacit, strove to build a team of experienced developers who would understand how Tacit’s platform works on a deep level. As Softjourn has a lot of experience in the Fintech domain – for example, building POS solutions and integrating digital payments – we were able to contribute to the project from day one.

Initially, Tacit was working with another remote team; however, after our first project, they decided to go fully onboard with Softjoun to build their dream team. What started as a small team of 3 people has grown significantly after over our 10 years of partnership.

Today, our team has 20 people working with Tacit to ensure their tech stack and platform works frictionlessly. Our experts are divided into server, mobile, web, and QA teams to ensure the product is supported from all sides.

“Softjourn has been an excellent, highly collaborative partner from the very beginning of our relationship. Their team members believe in delivering value, and we have been able to do a significant amount of development quite cost-effectively with them. “
Brenda Crainic, CTO of Tacit

Services We Have Worked On

We have helped our client by working on the backend and building:

  • White-label food ordering application.
  • Web-based ordering solution (clients can order and pay through the website).
  • Integration of multiple POS solutions.
  • Integrations with lockers (where the food is delivered to the self-service terminal, and a person collects the food).
  • In-seat ordering solutions for events.
  • Kiosks for self-ordering solutions.

Building a White-Label Food Ordering Application

After talking to our client to understand the project requirements and business goals, Softjourn’s team focused on building the white-label solution. Our team was focused on the app’s architecture and started adding new functionalities according to the client’s plan.

Our pilot feature launch led to 20 test cases, resulting in a productive and successful initial collaboration. Following the first testing round, the client opted to limit testing devices to six, entrusting all testing to Softjourn's QA team.

The features we developed for Tacit’s white-label food ordering application include:

  • Customizable search filters allow restaurant-goers to discover new restaurants, using filters such as location, neighborhood, cuisine, or dietary restrictions.
  • The capability to search menus, using filters such as health or dietary restrictions, ingredient, category, or cost.
  • The option to customize and modify orders, view order status notifications, monitor food preparation progress, place preorders, provide feedback, and create favorites/wish lists.
  • A way for users to pay straight from their smartphone.
  • The ability for users to specify how the check should be split among several people ordering.

Recent Features that We’ve Worked On

Over a decade of partnership with Tacit, we have undertaken numerous projects, each contributing uniquely to their business. In this overview, we aim to highlight the most impactful initiatives that have significantly boosted their customer base and overall success.

“I wanted to work with a company that understood our development process. We approach product design, implementation, and bug fixes in a very specific way. Softjourn was highly recommended for its technical expertise and ability to work effectively with our system.”
CTO of Tacit, Brenda Crainic

  • Rotational Menus: Softjourn's developers enabled our client to offer rotational menus, automating the process for campuses with managed food services. This feature supports both weekly and daily menu cycles, ideal for universities and restaurants with regular menu rotations.
  • 2FA Security: To enhance security and prevent fraud, we implemented two-factor authentication (2FA) using mobile devices. This feature, essential for sign-up, login, and phone number updates, safeguards against unauthorized account creation and order placement with stolen credit cards.
  • Donations Feature: Our collaboration introduced a donations feature, allowing Tacit's users to support charities directly through the platform. This integration not only facilitates charitable giving but also enriches the ordering experience.
  • Integration for Direct Payments: We developed modules for POS to enable direct payments within restaurants through Tacit's mobile app, streamlining transactions by scanning a card code.
  • Delivery Networks Reconciliation: Our solution automates the retrieval and submission of sales reports from delivery networks to the POS, ensuring accurate recording of transactions and simplifying reconciliation processes.
  • Development of New APIs: Throughout our partnership, Softjourn developed nine innovative APIs for food ordering and third-party integrations, significantly enhancing Tacit's service offerings and customer experience.
