We've been working with PEX since 2012 when we first helped them design and develop their mobile application. Since then, we've partnered with PEX on numerous other projects over the last 11 years, from their CRM, integrations, design, marketplace, and much more.

The Solution

The Softjourn and PEX teams collaborated to build a highly scalable microservices architecture. This architecture allows PEX to evolve their platform by enhancing their ability to manage cardholder data in one service while simultaneously working on improving embossing options in another service.

PEX, a New York fintech company founded in 2006, is a platform provider of next generation corporate card and expense management solutions for businesses. The PEX service enables companies to manage employee spending, payments to vendors, and distribute funds to program enrollees.

We've been working with PEX since 2012 when we first helped them design and develop their mobile application. Since then, we've partnered with PEX on numerous other projects over the last 11 years, from their CRM, integrations, design, marketplace, cloud optimization, and much more.

PEX offers a plethora of options when it comes to cards: physical cards for employees, virtual vendor cards for subscriptions, travel, and other recurring purchases, and even the ability to custom structure their corporate card program.

The Softjourn and PEX teams collaborated to build a highly scalable microservices architecture. This architecture allows PEX to evolve their platform by enhancing their ability to manage cardholder data in one service while simultaneously working on improving embossing options in another service.

Softjourn has been able to respond to the growth of the platform by growing the teams and providing talent. This partnership lets PEX focus more on engineering, and less on recruiting and talent management.

Rules for Spend & Expense Management

PEX is dedicated to helping businesses stay in control of spending through automation and rules. Our client understands that each group has their own unique spending needs, which is why they allow every card or group to have their own approved category and spending limits.

Together, our teams have created a request funding feature; receipt recognition for auto approvals; a decision rule management tool that allows managers can create decision rules that control transaction limits, transaction timeframes, and other critical variables; a service to execute bulk jobs such as funding, setting rulesets, and status changes; and automated billing.

We also helped PEX develop a customized purchase control application that uses decision control system APIs. In the cloud-based environment, the app creates an additional level of control for card transactions based on rules designed to meet the company's business requirements.

Marketplace & Integrations

Marketplace & Integrations

We've helped PEX build a robust marketplace with integrations to many of the leading accounting and productivity platforms.

Integrations include Google Drive, QuickBooks, Tray.io, Slack, Google Sheets, Certify, and Airtable, as well as PEX's own apps, such as Batch Funding, PEX Envelope App, PEX Auto Tagger, Spend Analytics, SSO, as well as their mobile apps.

They have connectors that sync transactions, fees, and other transfers of information to several accounting apps, such as Microsoft, QuickBooks, Sage Intacct, Procore, DATABASICS Blackbaud FE, MediaWeb, Zapier, Zoho, Aplos, and Xero.

Additionally, they offer exporters for Shelby, Serenic Navigator, Daxko, ACS Technologies, Microsoft, and Extreme Reach. Thousands of small and medium organizations in the US use these apps to improve their productivity and automate their reconciliation.

Not only does PEX have several incredible connectors, exporters, and integrated features, but PEX API can integrate with users' systems to give them a custom, automated payment platform, with the ability to process millions of transactions a day.

Recently, PEX launched the Spend Analytics app powered by Microsoft PowerBI Embedded. This powerful app gives small and medium enterprises the same analytics capabilities usually reserved for larger enterprises.

PEX also makes it easy for their users to suggest other apps that they'd like to have available in the Marketplace.

We've helped them serve their customers with greater ease by developing customer service support via live chat, dispute processing, custom & scheduled reporting services, callbacks, notification services, business management, and zip file processing.

We've helped to create beautiful user experiences within their dashboard web application, giving their customers a sleek and easy-to-navigate interface. Together we designed their Getting Started Experience, a portal through which potential users fill in their data and submit documents to become customers.

Since the beginning, PEX has always been striving to create the most modern solutions ensuring that their products are better for their customers.

Over the years, we've worked together on developing a cross-platform app, which allowed users to add or reduce funds on employee cards, suspend cards, review transactions by the cardholder, give approval, and more.

Over time, we've assisted PEX in keeping their applications modern through rewriting in Xamarin and migrating their services to the latest frameworks, including NET 6 to .NET open source and Linux. We've also worked to bring value to their business by migrating monolithic architecture to microservices.

We also support PEX in managing their cloud environments across Azure and AWS. Our dedicated DevOps team is committed to optimizing cloud expenses, ensuring adherence to secure cloud practices, and maintaining exceptional performance levels. Through our collaboration, we help PEX leverage the full potential of their cloud infrastructure, achieving cost-efficiency without compromising on security or performance.
