Challenge

Myers-Briggs’ existing mobile application, built on Xamarin, was no longer supported by the Android Play Store, requiring an urgent modernization to maintain functionality across platforms.

Solution

Softjourn upgraded the app to Ionic, preserving its core features while ensuring compatibility with iOS, Android, and web platforms. Our team efficiently rewrote the codebase and delivered the app on time, despite working with new technologies and tight deadlines.

Results

The Ionic rewrite reduced long-term development costs by enabling a single codebase for multiple platforms, improved performance, and made future updates and integrations more straightforward.

Myers-Briggs now has a modern, scalable app with enterprise-grade security and support, ready for future growth.

Introduction

Our collaboration with Myers-Briggs began in 2015 and has grown significantly over the years. We have been privileged to support numerous projects, ranging from feature development to modernizing their application.

When the Myers-Briggs team presented a unique concept for a new platform, we were excited to help bring their vision to life. Our team of skilled developers and Quality Assurance engineers committed to understanding the client’s needs and crafted a comprehensive roadmap for rewriting the application. This ensured the successful transformation of their initial ideas into a fully functional platform.

Throughout our partnership, the Softjourn team has consistently demonstrated their expertise and adaptability, successfully navigating challenges and delivering outstanding results.

Upgrading the Myers-Briggs Mobile App

In 2023, our team started and completed an exciting project: the Myers-Briggs mobile app.

This project aimed to create a portable guide to MBTI-type assessments, allowing users to gain insights into their strengths, potential blind spots, and approaches to work-related stress from their phone or tablet.

Their existing application, built on Xamarin, was no longer supported by the Android Play Store. The client trusted us to upgrade their application due to our experience with legacy modernization projects.

Our main objective for this project was to update their app to Ionic without altering its functionality, as quickly as possible. Our team of experts worked diligently for over three months; during this time, we thoroughly audited and investigated the previous codebase, wrote new code, and prepared the application for release.

While we’ve been building world-class educational platforms for Myers-Briggs, we’ve faced some obstacles along the way.

The Myers-Briggs Team

Challenges

New Technologies

Our team had to work with Ionic and Xamarin, which at the time, were two new technologies for us. The engineers on the team had to learn how they work quickly and get up to speed quickly so we could continue the process.

This meant we had to quickly learn and adapt to both the Ionic framework (an open-source UI toolkit for building cross-platform mobile apps) and Xamarin, while also reengineering the app to meet new deployment requirements.

Team Changes

Because the number of team members was limited, we had to reorganize work so everything would be delivered on time. Despite the time constraints, our team rose to the challenge and demonstrated exceptional skills and dedication to understanding these two technologies.

The application was successfully released in 2023, marking a significant milestone for our collaboration with the client. The project’s final deliverables included launching on the Apple Store and Google Play Market's source codes and release builds.

The success of this application rewrite showcases our team's expertise in mobile app legacy modernization and our ability to deliver high-quality results within tight deadlines.

We are proud of our team's outstanding performance and look forward to this application's positive impact on users seeking to understand themselves better and enhance their personal and professional growth.

The Benefits of an Application Rewrite by Softjourn

Rewriting our client’s application from Xamarin to Ionic offered several benefits:

  • Single codebase for multiple platforms: Ionic allows creating apps for iOS, Android, and the web from a single codebase, enabling faster development, updates, and bug fixes than building separate native apps.
  • Proven and constantly improving web technologies: With Ionic, there is a large community that continually enhances web tools, adds new features, and updates its libraries. Ionic has leveraged these proven, enduring web standards, while support for Xamarin ended in 2023.
  • Enterprise-grade support and security: Ionic provides dedicated support teams to assist with app design, development, and delivery and offers advanced, multi-layered mobile security solutions.
  • Easy integration with web services: Since Ionic uses web technologies, integrating with web services and APIs can be more straightforward than with Xamarin.
  • Lightweight and performant: Ionic applications are generally lightweight and can perform well on various devices, thanks to their use of web technologies and efficient rendering.
  • Cost reduction: Because Ionic allows for cross-platform development with a single codebase, it can reduce the overall development and maintenance costs compared to maintaining separate native applications for each platform.
